Women’s soccer struggles

After a perfect 4-0 start to the season, the women’s soccer team was riding a winning streak that was a complete confidence builder. However, one tough week led to two straight losses against La Roche College and Davis & Elkins College. Each matched ended with the same result, a 2-1 defeat in games that Point Park was extremely competitive.“I think right now we are a little frustrated because we should be winning. We definitely should have beaten La Roche,” said Megan Kuntz, a sophomore forward.Against La Roche, the Pioneers had a 24-10 advantage in shots. Of these, 12 of Point Park’s shots were on goal. Only one of these opportunities resulted in a goal for Point Park. Kuntz added to her goals tally in the 73rd minute off of a Kristina Stammer assist. This goal gave Kuntz her fifth goal of the season. Head coach Maggie Kuhn realized that her team was outplaying La Roche but didn’t end up with a victory.”We couldn’t find water from a boat. We outshot them but just couldn’t score,” Kuhn said.In the next match against unbeaten Davis & Elkins, Point Park played a much more physical team.  Davis & Elkins hadn’t allowed a single goal all season up until this game due to their strong defense.“I think the one thing that startled us a little bit was that they’re a lot bigger; they were a lot taller and stronger than us,” senior captain Karly Shorts said.Once again, Kuntz scored the lone goal for Point Park off another Stammer assist. This time, Kuntz provided a huge spark to the team with a goal off a bicycle kick.“I was pretty much beside the goalie so I was facing the wrong direction to get a good kick. I remember thinking ‘I should probably turn my body around’ but I knew I didn’t have time to,” said Kuntz.Kuntz’s impressive goal tied the game at 1-1 in the 85th minute. However, Davis & Elkins scored the game winner only 65 seconds later.Freshman Erica Roney started in the net for the Pioneers for the first time against Davis & Elkins. Due to her inexperience, there were minor concerns that she wouldn’t be ready for a quality opponent, but she silenced those doubts quickly.”I kept thinking ‘great, we’re going to get killed. This is a good team.’ But she really stepped up to the plate. She did amazing, especially against them,” Kuntz said. Now, after a solid performance against Davis & Elkins, Roney has seemed to capture the starting goalkeeper spot for the time being. Point Park currently has four goalies on the roster: Roney, sophomore Lauren Finkebeiner, junior Anna Shaw, and junior Mackenzie Pinto, who was named the All-Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week earlier this season,.”In my opinion, now it’s up to the other goalkeepers to prove themselves in order to get that spot off of Erica,” Kuhn said. The team now has a break up until their next game on the 29th against Brescia, a KIAC conference member. With a ten day break, the team will have daily practices to get ready for conference play to start up again.”My role and the other leaders’ [role] is to keep the enthusiasm up, keep them going and keep the conference play in the foresight so they know what they’re working towards,” Shorts said.
