Word From the Weiss

This past weekend was the fourth annual Point Park Athletics Alumni Weekend, and there were a variety of events that brought a family together.

The affair always starts with a golf event which took place this year at Hickory Heights Golf Club and continues with alumni reunion games, with several sports being played.

The final official event of the weekend is the Pioneer Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The three members inducted Saturday now bring the total to 57 individuals and one team. The three members inducted into the class of 2014 were Dennis Colamarino, Gavin Prosser and Beth Wertz-Brubach.

Colamarino batted .388 in his three seasons with the Point Park baseball team placing fifth in program history with 155 runs batted in and 50 stolen bases. Colamarino ranks in the top 10 of practically every statistic, and had he attended the university for all four years, his numbers would be even better. He was part of three teams that made the NAIA World Series and compiled a 128-26 record.

Gavin Prosser played for the Point Park men’s basketball team from 2004-2007, and is currently an assistant manager at the Point Park Student Center and assistant men’s and women’s golf coach. Prosser transferred to Point Park from Slippery Rock University and ranks third in program history with 473 assists and second with 217 made three- point shots. His senior year was a part of the 29-2 national tournament team. Prosser scored 1,539 points in three seasons and was 61-25 in his time with the Pioneers.

Beth Wertz-Brubach is a two- sport athlete who played for the women’s basketball and softball teams. She is the first inductee who has played softball since the class of 2009-10, when Linda Kiebler-Guercio was inducted, and the third softball player to make the hall of fame. Wertz-Brubach had 974 career points, 13th most in program history, in four seasons of a dominant time in Point Park women’s basketball.  Wertz-Brubach also had 549 rebounds and 387 assists which showed that she could bring a lot to a game. In softball, Wertz-Brubach played catcher/outfield and was an NAIA District-18 all-star in addition to being a team leader.

While the focus of The Globe sports articles pertain to the present, it is always important to remember the past and how athletes such as the three inductees conducted themselves on and off the field. All of the inductees should serve as inspirations to the current student-athletes in their time at Point Park.
