Point Park volleyball opened its season at the Hall of Fame Classic in North Canton, Oh., where the Pioneers went without a win in three total matches.
The Pioneers faced Walsh on Friday morning. The beginning of the first set had the teams trading leads. After being tied 10-10, Walsh was able to pull away with the lead and eventually win the set 25-16.
Aside from scoring the first point in the second set, Point Park was unable to hold a lead over Walsh during the second or third set. Walsh would take those sets at scores of 25-12 and 25-13.
The Pioneers met Lake Erie College in their Friday afternoon match. Lake Erie came out with a 3-0 lead in the first set, until Point Park tied things back up. However, Lake Erie did not give up a lead for the remainder of the set, winning 25-19.
The second set was much more back and forth, as the Pioneers momentarily held a lead at 8-7 before Lake Erie tied it up and later took the lead right back. Erie went on to win the set 25-16.
Point Park had a 12-11 lead halfway through the third set. Lake Erie would once again take the lead and run with it. Despite a strong push by the Pioneers, the set ended at a score of 25-21.
On Saturday, Point Park played their final match against Saginaw Valley State.
The Pioneers led 2-1 early in the first set, but Saginaw Valley would score five straight points. From then on, they would not give Point Park a chance to get close to them on the scoreboard, taking the win 25-16.
Point Park once again held a lead to begin the second set, but Saginaw Valley had another scoring run, putting up eight straight points to make it 8-3. The Pioneers would go on a scoring run of their own to tie the set, but they were unable to overtake Saginaw Valley for the lead again. Saginaw Valley would end up winning the set 25-18.
The third set was Saginaw Valley’s most dominant of the match, refusing Point Park to hold the lead at any point, and securing the match victory with a score of 25-12.
Over the weekend, freshman Avery Budrys Rini led the Pioneers in kills with 26. Junior Marianna Oyola-Rivera led Point Park in assists with 58.
Following a non-conference road game against Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday, the Pioneers will travel to Institute, West Virginia, over the weekend to participate in the UC/WVSU Volleyball Crossover. Their first match begins Friday at 1 p.m. against Shepherd University.
