Siblings unite on the volleyball court

Sibling rivalry is a basic psychiatric trait that many families experience during their lives. A far less common occurrence is when siblings are on the same sport team. That has happened not once, but twice this year for Point Park University’s sports teams. The women’s volleyball team can boast that they have one of these sibling duos. Rachel and Taylor Roddy, a senior and freshman respectively, are finally going to spend a whole year playing side by side. The sisters were only on the same team one game during their high school, and as a result they are fired up to play this year.”I’m excited to play together,” Taylor said in a phone interview. “It’s a little nerve-wracking to be playing at a higher level, but it also feels right.”The other set of siblings are on the men’s basketball team; sophomore all-conference guard T.J. Heatherington will be joined by his brother, freshman Rob. Both guards should be able to make the Pioneers into playoff contenders, especially if Rob can match his brother’s first year.Recruitment of new players is always necessary to keep an organization alive and well, and despite the fact that these siblings are close, Rachel Roddy said she had little to do with the recruitment of Taylor.”I let her do anything that she wanted,” Rachel said in a phone interview. She came on her own. Coach [Bruno] pushed for her to come to tryouts, and the rest just happened.”Six-year head coach Mike Bruno offered a different viewpoint.”Her big sister paved the way,” Bruno said in a phone interview. “She’s familiar with the program and the university now and she likes it here. Rachel definitely helped.”Bruno is not completely new to coaching siblings. During his first year of coaching at Waynesburg University, he had twins on his team. But he had one underlying concern about the two playing together.”I don’t foresee any rivalries,” Bruno said. “They are really close. What I want is for Taylor to not be viewed as Rachel’s little sister and instead as Taylor. We need her to set her own path instead of having her just follow in Rachel’s footsteps.”Identity may be a minor issue throughout the year, but nobody is predicting any conflicts between either set of siblings.Overall, these added players and family bonds should help take their respective teams over the top this year.
