Volleyball succumbs to Walsh

Sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Oberacker had a total of 17 kills in front of a standing room-only crowd that gathered to watch Point Park University battle against their rival, but it was not enough to get the win in the rematch of last year’s American Mideast Conference (AMC) tournament championship.”We got out-played,” head Coach Mike Bruno simply said after the loss that was more than just a blemish to their AMC record, 2-1. This was the first loss on their home court of the Greentree SportsPlex in 16 games for Point Park’s  volleyball team. Their last loss was on Oct. 8, 2008 against Shawnee State University. The Pioneers fought hard against the Cavaliers, pulling ahead in the first match after being tied 7-7 and winning 25-18. Things took a turn for the worse in the second match and Point Park did not seem to be able catch Walsh University who came out strong and won the match 25-19. Point Park would not be beaten easily and took a lead of 16-13 in the third match, but Walsh battled back and tied the game 20-20. They were able to keep the score close at 20-20, but Walsh took the lead and won the match 25-21. The Pioneers again came out strong and kept the game tied at seven all during the must-win fourth match. Point Park lost the match 25-20 ending a long hard fought night for the Pioneers”It was two good teams squaring off,” Bruno said.Junior setter Katie Geary had a total of 40 assists for the night to help the team with their total of 47 kills. Senior outside hitter Rachel Roddy had a total of 13 kills, 14 digs and 32 receptions, while freshman outside hitter Chelsea Katkich had a total of 10 kills, four digs and one ace. Sophomore Amanda Ardinger helped the defense by having 21 digs and was assisted by sophomore Margaret Gillooly.”We would have come out on top if it came down to who wanted it more,” Lindsey Oberacker said.  “Our errors got the best of us.”The team had a total of 21 errors on the attack- nine reception errors, four blocking errors and six serving errors. Walsh had 16 attack errors, one reception error, two blocking errors and eight serving errors. The team flew out the following morning to play the Christian Invitational in Clearwater Florida where they went 4-1 and reached a total of 20 wins for this year. The Pioneers won two matches on Friday against Trinity College from Trinity, Fla. with scores of 25-9, 25-16, 15-25 and 25-16 and against local Carlow University with scores of 25-20, 25-18, 22-25, and 25-17. They lost their only match of the weekend on Friday against St. Thomas University from Opa Locka, Fla. with scores of 16-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, and 7-15. On Saturday, the team won both of their games against Mount Berry College and Clearwater Christian College. Berry College is a National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) division III provisional school. After losing the first match 24-26, Point Park won the next three matches 25-13, 25-17 and 25-17. Clearwater Christian, who hosted the tournament, was beaten by Point Park by scores of 25-23, 25-18, 22-25 and 25-23. The Pioneers improved their record to 21-7 overall.”Everyone has a blank palette, everyone had to prove themselves and we ended up beating the host team,” Oberacker said about the trip to Florida. “We will need to keep the same spirit and the same energy,” Roddy said earlier this season. That spirit and energy will be tested tonight in a conference against Mt. Vernon Nazarene University. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. and a Fan Van will be available for the game.
